Bernd Huber named new president of Venice International University

8 Oct 2026

The longtime president of LMU Munich takes the helm of the international university consortium based in Venice.

As the new president of Venice International University (VIU), Professor Bernd Huber, who served as president of LMU Munich from 2002 to 2025, aims to strengthen international academic collaboration among the consortium’s member institutions. His priorities include expanding joint research projects and networks and developing academic programs that address pressing challenges facing society.

“I am very much looking forward to taking on this new role,” Huber said. He has been familiar with VIU for many years through his work representing LMU Munich on its governing bodies. “Together with VIU’s member institutions and staff, I look forward to developing new initiatives and ideas for this outstanding network. Of course, I will maintain particularly close ties with LMU, which is one of VIU’s founding members and has a strong presence on San Servolo through its students and researchers.”

Located on the island of San Servolo in the Venetian Lagoon, VIU is an international consortium of more than 20 universities and research institutions. Founded in 1995, it promotes joint interdisciplinary teaching and research programs as well as international exchanges among students and researchers.

Huber was among the first professors to teach at VIU. During his tenure as president of LMU Munich, he represented the university on VIU’s governing bodies and also served as chair of its Strategic Committee.

An economist specializing in public finance, Huber succeeds Italian diplomat Umberto Vattani as president. Vattani will continue to serve VIU as honorary president.
